In an act of unparalleled greed, a newly hired Activision-Blizzard executive was paid millions of dollars last month despite the fact that the company is preparing to announce a huge round of layoffs. Though it’s far from uncommon in the gaming industry to “trim the fat” like this when times are tough (i.e., when shareholders are disappointed with sales) and downright commonplace for corporations to award absurdly large signing bonuses to executives, Activision-Blizzard’s most recent gaffe is particularly egregious....

The purchased assets will be integrated with Accenture’s Cloud First offerings, a catalogue of cloud-based solutions that includes cloud migration, infrastructure, and application services, as well as built-in partnerships with a variety of third-party vendors. Adobe has been gradually updating its Creative Cloud apps with native support for Apple Silicon Macs. Today, Premiere Rush gets an upgrade. In addition to performance optimizations for M1 Mac owners, Premiere Rush on iOS includes a new Timeline Context Menu and changes to reset functionality. Adobe Premiere Pro also received a small update today with Dynamic Lumetri Previews. Premiere Pro doesn’t have native Apple Silicon support yet, but a beta version is available....

On January 14, Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) announced it had detained members of the REvil ransomware gang operating from several regions of the country and dismantled the group’s operations. Previous action by Europol resulted in the arrest of a suspected REvil affiliate near the Polish and Ukranian border. According to analysis of chatter on Dark Web forums by cybersecurity researchers at Trustwave SpiderLabs, the recent arrests, particularly those by Russia, appear to have scared cyber criminals, some of whom appear to be worried that they might be next....

Alpine today announced its first aftermarket in-dash receiver with support for Apple’s CarPlay feature for iPhone users. The new Alpine iLX-007 will be the company’s first display to support CarPlay following Pioneer’s rollout of the feature to its latest NEX displays earlier this month. The Apple AirTag has been available for just over a week. Since then, we have seen a user rebuilding an AirTag as a thinner card that fits into wallets and also learned that it’s “frighteningly easy” to stalk using the item tracker. Now, a security researcher was able to hack the accessory, modifying its NFC URL for Lost Mode. The German security researcher Stack Smashing tweeted today (via The 8-bit) that he was able to “break into the microcontroller of the AirTag” and modified elements of the item tracker software....
