[This article includes SPOILERS for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. ‘The Patriot’.]

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has returned from its brief winter hiatus with a new focus. With Ghost Rider and his uncle trapped between dimensions, the team has now turned their attention to a multitude of threats, but the most pressing involves Dr. Radcliffe’s LMD program. It has not worked out the way he intended, even with his villainous intentions being revealed, but he has a spy on the inside: an LMD version of Melinda May.

May just recently discovered she was being held prisoner as her LMD body double began to uncover her less than human attributes, but in the eyes of S.H.I.E.L.D. the threat has been neutralized. This has given them a chance to turn their focus to the anti-Inhuman Senator Nadeer and the Watchdogs, who are working together, and the promo for the next episode teases a plot to set up S.H.I.E.L.D. and the potential of a traitor within.

Television Promos released the promo, featured above, following the premiere of the newest episode. The promo for the next episode, titled “Wake Up,” shows May once again fighting for her freedom, as well as Coulson and Yo-Yo being photographed and taken away in handcuffs, which surely leads to them discussing the potential of a traitor lying in the organization. In conjuncture with the promo, ABC has also released stills from the episode.

This is not the first time a spy or traitor has popped up within S.H.I.E.L.D. It began with John Garrett aka the Clairvoyant (Bill Paxton), and then turned into Grant Ward (Brett Dalton). Meanwhile, Agent 33 has previously played the part of May to infiltrate the organization, while post-Terrigenesis Andrew Garner and a mind controlled Daisy have also been among those to work against S.H.I.E.L.D. from within. The obvious answer for the mole is the LMD version of May, who could operate in coordination with Radcliffe’s plan to distract the team as he gains access to the Darkhold, but hopefully it is not that obvious of a reveal.

However, one of the other interesting moments of the promo features Coulson post-set up. Not only is he arrested, but photographs are being taken of him as he is escorted out by authorities. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, they have made it very clear that Coulson is still dead within the mind of the public. They even made a point about this in the latest episode when Mace tried to step down as Director to let Coulson retake leadership, but Coulson could not accept because of his secret resurrection. The writers will have to figure out some way to explain away the photos making headlines, and thus revealing to the entire MCU (like his former Avenger buddies) that Coulson is still alive and well.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. continues next Tuesday with ‘Wake Up’ @10pm on ABC.
