Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 6 takes place one year after the events of the season 5 finale, which ended with the deaths of Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) and Leo Fitz (Iain De Caestecker).
Since the show’s future was uncertain, season 5 provided an end to Coulson’s journey by having the character die after spending his final days with May (Ming-Na Wen) in Tahiti. Shortly before the finale was aired, ABC renewed Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. for a 13-episode sixth season set to air in May, though the season was later pushed back to July. In November, ABC made a surprising decision in renewing the series for season 7, several months before season 6 is scheduled to premiere.
TV Line reports that season 6 will pick up one year after the show left off and described the season as “The Search for Fitz.” Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) will be “a woman on a mission” as she tries to find her husband.
In an attempt to save Mack (Henry Simmons), Fitz was killed when he was hit by debris from a falling building. However, all hope was not lost for the fallen S.H.I.E.L.D. agent. It was decided that though Fitz had died, there was still a way of bringing him back. When Coulson’s team was trapped in the future, Fitz put himself in suspended animation so that he could be revived decades later. This means that in the present day, Fitz is still alive. His body is still inside the cryogenic pod, but floating somewhere in space. It was previously revealed in the season 6 trailer that much of the show would continue to focus on outer space.
Apparently, finding Fitz’s body will prove to be a significant challenge, considering that they’ll still be searching for it a year later. While season 6 is utilizing a much larger time jump than previous seasons, it fits with the show’s schedule. Season 5 ended in May 2018, and season 6 will return in July 2019. Also, the time jump will allow Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. continue to ignore Avengers: Infinity War. Season 5 noticeably avoided any reference to Infinity War’s cliffhanger ending for obvious reasons. “The Snap” that wiped out half of the universe understandably would have had a tremendous effect on the show and its characters. Since Avengers: Endgame hits theaters at the end of April, life on Earth will most likely return to some sense of normalcy by the time Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. airs in the summer.
