In terms of the many, many blockbuster sequels set to come out this year, one of the more highly-anticipated is director Ridley Scott’s Alien: Covenant. Offering fans a chance to return to the Alien cinematic universe for the first time since 2012’s Prometheus, the new film promises to be a much different experience than Prometheus, which was met with rather mixed reviews and reactions from fans. Featuring a similar aesthetic and tone to the original Alien than any of the subsequent sequels, Covenant is already shaping up to be one of the scarier and gorier major releases set to hit theaters this year, as Scott seeks to return the franchise to its original roots.
Set multiple years after the events of Prometheus, the new film follows the crew of the colonization ship, Covenant, as they land on a previously uncharted planet seeking to begin human life somewhere else in the universe. While the crew initially believes the planet to be a hidden paradise, they soon learn that it hides horrors and monsters worse and more dangerous than anything they’ve ever encountered before.
Alien: Covenant features a mostly new cast of actors in the franchise, with Katherine Waterston set to lead the film as the Covenant crew’s captain, Daniels. However, one of the few returning faces is that of Michael Fassbender, who is playing Walter the Android in the film (as well as other Androids), a character that tags along with the Covenant crew onto the planet. A brand new promo clip for Alien: Covenant teases a more full-fledged introduction for Walter, which fans can expect to see this Friday, March 10th. Check out the teaser for yourselves, above.
Similar to his Prometheus character, David, it’s unclear where Walter’s allegiances truly lie so far, though it’s entirely possible he may be intentionally leading some of the crew members to their deaths like he did in Prometheus. Fassbender is the kind of actor who can capably play either sides of that coin too, which could make it difficult to really tell who’s side he’s on. The promo itself doesn’t give much away either, featuring brief looks at the actual robotic body Walter is made up of, and teasing the possible danger of acquiring knowledge.
Whether he’s referring distinctly to himself growing and learning, or to the Covenant’s expedition to the uncharted planet, is unclear. In fact, not much is known about the actual evolution of the plot once the Covenant crew lands and begins exploring. About the only thing that’s clear is that it follows a similar formula to the original Alien, with Billy Crudup’s Christopher Oram being on the receiving end of a welcoming facehugger. What happens after that, aside from the broad strokes, will have to wait to be seen - including what Walter’s involvement is.
