Ridley Scott’s Alien: Covenant has gotten a new UK poster, showing protagonist Daniels (Katherine Waterston) up close with a deadly “Neomorph”. The Alien franchise got its start way back in 1979 and has cemented its status as a true icon of the genre. Serving as the eighth installment in the series proper - provided you want to throw Aliens vs. Predator and Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem from 2004 and 2007 into the mix - Covenant continues from where Prometheus left off in 2012. 20th Century Fox is ramping up its marketing for the film too, following the release of the second Alien: Covenant theatrical trailer.
Based on what’s been revealed about the film so far, Alien: Covenant very much brings to mind Scott’s previous Alien movies - for better or for worse. The new UK poster for Covenant is now online too, further playing up the sci-fi/horror elements of the film - via an image that may conjure memories of a particularly memorable encounter between Ellen Ripley and a Xenomorph, in David Fincher’s Alien 3.
In the UK Covenant poster featured below, Waterston striking a fearful pose immediately reminiscent of Sigourney Weaver as Ripley during her previous Alien movie appearances. It’s more than obvious that Scott will continue to draw direct inspiration from past installments in the series, and with any luck Waterston will prove to be every bit as plucky a leading heroine as Weaver was before her.
Alien: Covenant will not only pick up certain plot threads left dangling by Prometheus; it will also pave the way for a prequel/sequel tentatively titled Alien: Awakening. Scott has indicated that he may start production on Awakening in 2018 and has further discussed his interest in making even more Alien films thereafter. The tone and mood established by Covenant will undoubtedly have a big part to play in how Scott’s plans ultimately play out.
Seeing as how Scott has already announced plans for how he intends to indefinitely continue the series going forward, it doesn’t seem likely that the British director will stop making Alien movies any time soon. As such, his obsession with reprising past hits in the franchise - which is put on full display yet again in the above poster for Alien: Covenant - is hard to ignore. That being said, here’s to hoping for the very best when Scott’s latest sci-fi thriller makes its way to theaters later this May.
