Kenneth McAlpine, a former contestant from Amazing Race Canada died from a tragic cliff fall. He went out hiking alone and never came back. McAlpine’s family and friends opened up about their heartbreak.
McAlpine ran the Amazing Race Canada with his best friend, Ryan Lachapelle, who both grew up in Collingwood, Ontario. The pair shared a love of surfing and finding adventure. Chef McAlpine and events coordinator Lachapelle ran the race together and just barely missed the win by coming in 2nd place on the last leg of the race for season 5. Even though they didn’t win the race, the unstoppable force proved that they were as much best friends as they were teammates.
According to Global News Canada, McAlpine went hiking alone on his 28th birthday on Mount Gimli in the Canadian province Kootenay region, which was described by locals as a very popular hiking and climbing spot for experienced climbers. After he didn’t return home, rescue teams launched a search in the area and the former Amazing Race Canada contestant was found dead. The coroner’s office is investigating McAlpine’s death. According to South Columbia Search and Rescue’s Mike Hudsont, it’s suspected that McAlpine fell roughly 823 feet while hiking. McAlpine’s father, Malcolm McAlpine, said that his son lived life to the fullest. He spoke about his active and adventurous lifestlye, saying, “He packed a lot in, that’s for sure.”
The caption read, “We are heartbroken over the loss of Season 5 racer Kenneth McAlpine.” The post continues, “Part of TEAM GIVE’R, Kenneth’s infectious personality left a lasting impression not only on us, but with viewers across the country.” McAlpine’s father continued to speak about his character, saying, “He embraced life, he was brave, and he was a pretty cool guy.” He continued on about his son’s legacy, “Someone told me, ‘He was the kind of guy you’d want your daughter to marry.’ Everyone loved him. He made his mark.” Even the restaurant that he was a chef at had only good things to say about his adventurous soul, saying, “Kenneth was one of the most awesome people that we have had the opportunity to work with and know.”
The 28-year-old adventurer had a lust for life and an enthusiasm that was contagious to both his family, friends, co-workers, and to fans. McAlpine was young, but had proved to everyone around him that it’s never too soon to have an action-packed life. Amazing Race Canada fans will truly miss half of Team Give’r. Hiking and climbing were some of his passions, and he was living life until the very moment it was taken from him. RIP Kenneth McAlpine.
