AMC has announced the premiere date for the second half of Into The Badlands season 3, and that the remaining eight episodes will serve as the overall conclusion to the series. Created by Smallville’s Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, the martial-arts fantasy series first debuted on AMC in 2015. Set in a dystopian future where a feudal society has taken root in what was once the American Midwest, the series stars Daniel Wu as a trained assassin named Sunny. The series also stars Emily Beecham, Orla Brady, and, from season 2 onwards, Nick Frost (The Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy).
Despite receiving positive reviews from the outset - especially regarding the show’s impressive choreography and fight scenes - the show was unable to reach anywhere near the ratings enjoyed by fellow AMC shows such as The Walking Dead. Regardless, the network believed in the show enough to repeatedly increase the episode count. Following a 6-episode first season, Into The Badlands was renewed for a 10-episode second season and then a 16-episode third. The first half of season 3 aired early in 2018, ending on a huge cliffhanger that revealed new layers to the mysterious world and saw Sunny take extreme measures to save his infant son.
Speaking at the Television Critics Association winter press tour (as reported by The Wrap), AMC announced that the concluding installments of season 3 would premiere Sunday, March 24. The second episode would follow on March 25, with the show remaining on Monday nights thereafter for the remainder of its run. Additionally, the network announced that the show would not receive a fourth season, but instead wrap up with the remaining, already-produced episodes.
AMC has also announced that The Son, starring Pierce Brosnan, will conclude with its current season. In their places, AMC is set to begin airing popular new shows Killing Eve and A Discovery of Witches. Into the Badlands stars were quick to respond to the unfortunate news. Offering a mixture of surprise and disappointment, Wu and Frost, who play the often-sparring double-act of Sunny and Bajie, respectively, took time out to praise both the fans and everybody that worked on the show via social media. Check out their statements below:
Remaining fans of the show will no doubt share in the disappointment. Offering a more colorful and fun take on the fantasy genre than most examples on television at the moment, Into The Badlands had created a world that blended futuristic science and mysticism that had only just begun to really be touched upon. After two seasons focused on feuding Barons and power struggles, the mystery of Azra was only now coming to the fore. With only eight episodes left, especially ones already produced, it feels unlikely that fans will get all the answers to all the questions that have arisen. Should the show ultimately conclude without resolutions - or, even worse still, with a cliffhanger - that disappointment will surely turn to frustration and numerous petitions for streaming services to resurrect it. Whatever the case, however, the show will no doubt go out in epic, action-packed style.
