Determining the D&D alignments of various characters is always fun, especially when you are doing it with such interesting and multi-dimensional shows like American Horror Story. This show makes each season unique and the characters different even though they are played by the same actors.
We have already determined the D&D alignments of the characters from the third season titled Coven and the sixth season titled Roanoke, but now it’s time to look at the D&D alignments of characters from American Horror Story: 1984.
Donna Chambers: Lawful Neutral
Donna Chambers first poses as a nurse named Rita but we soon find out that she is actually a psychologist who let the serial killer Benjamin Richter out to study him in his natural habitat. Her character is probably the one that undergoes the most development throughout the season.
Donna is a Lawful Neutral character though that alignment does change as the story unfolds. All of her growth can be summed up by her always following whatever she believes in, both before and after her great awakening when she realized she had done a bad thing releasing Richter.
Richard Ramirez: Lawful Evil
Richard Ramirez is a serial killer who has also been referred to as the Night Stalker. He is a dedicated follower of Satan who kills to please his master, the Devil. Many different factors, including the fact that he grew up in an abusive household, contributed to him going crazy and become a twisted murderer.
Richard is a Lawful Evil character. The only moral code he follows is his faith in Satan and whatever he requires. He does enjoy killing people but that is in part because it pleases the Devil. Richard also eventually follows some orders given to him by the two women he likes due to their shared love for cruelty.
Benjamin Richter: Lawful Good
Benjamin Richter is first presented to us as the famous serial killer Mr. Jingles, but we soon learn that his memory has betrayed him and he is actually innocent. Benjamin grows to become a loving father and husband who will do anything to protect his family.
Benjamin is a Lawful Good character. But before he started doing what was right and acting as a positive character, he kept killing people being convinced that that was his nature. In fact, he probably started as more of a Lawful Evil character.
Ray Powell: Neutral Evil
Ray Powell is the soul of the group of friends at the center of the story. Despite being a fun-loving character, he often comes off like a scared and whiny guy who subsequently abandons one of his injured and dying friends to save himself.
Ray is a Neutral Evil character. He might have been more of a True Neutral character at first but his betrayal and cowardice ultimately led him to become a petty character. Ray became someone from the group of protagonists that the audience simply can’t stand.
Chet Clancy: True Neutral
Chet Clancy is a hunk who supposedly participated in the Olympics. However, he was disqualified due to his usage of drugs and alcohol. This led him to develop anger issues and he would get annoyed every time someone brought up the Olympics.
Chet is a True Neutral character. He doesn’t actively help others, but he doesn’t seem to be doing much harm either except for occasionally starting fights. Chet is obsessed with his appearance and appears to be quite petty most of the time, though he is charming around Brooke, who finds him attractive.
Trevor Kirchner: Neutral Good
Trevor Kirchner is the activities director at Camp Redwood. He is portrayed as an extremely attractive man who Montana instantly gets attracted to. She even states that she saw him in the original version of Jane Fonda’s workout video (he was edited out in the final version because of his genitalia attracting unneeded attention).
Trevor is a Neutral Good character. He tries to get everyone together to save them and is mostly seen doing good things. In the end, Trevor realizes that who he really wants to be with is Montana as they are the ones truly in love with each other.
Xavier Plympton: Chaotic Neutral
Xavier Plympton is an aerobics instructor and aspiring actor (who had a part in some adult movies). Xavier is the one who initially got a job at Camp Redwood and invited his friends to tag along. He later blamed himself for putting them all into this dangerous situation.
Xavier is a Chaotic Neutral character. He mostly does whatever he does to stay afloat and possibly advance his acting career. However, once he gets killed in Redwood and becomes a ghost, he becomes obsessed with trying to kill the people responsible for his death.
Margaret Booth: Lawful Evil
Margaret Booth is the director of Camp Redwood who also happens to be the survivor of a massacre that happened there in the past. Despite her first posing as a victim, we soon discover that she was actually the killer who then framed Benjamin for the whole thing.
Margaret is a Lawful Evil character. She believes that she must get revenge on all of her abusers but she soon realizes that she enjoys killing people. Despite being a devout Christian, Margaret finds a common language with another serial killer, Richard Ramirez, who is coincidentally a Satanist.
Montana Duke: Chaotic Neutral
Montana Duke is a seemingly friendly aerobics instructor who is planning to kill Brooke because her fiancé killed Montana’s brother. Montana gradually realizes that Brooke is actually not the evil person she believes her to be and spends the rest of eternity as a ghost with her lover Trevor.
Montana is a Chaotic Neutral character. She is out for herself and will do whatever it takes to get her revenge. She knows how to pretend to be friendly while having sick thoughts. Nevertheless, she doesn’t want to inflict pain on everyone but rather only on Brooke (who she eventually abandons and accepts as a good person).
Brooke Thompson: Neutral Good
Brooke Thompson is a new, innocent girl in the group who decides to tag along and go to Camp Redwood for the summer. Just like everyone else, she tries to survive but she also soon discovers that Montana is the sister of her fiancé’s dead best friend.
Brooke is a Neutral Good character. She is kind to everyone and sees the good side of the people around her. However, she then becomes vengeful and wants to kill Margaret for doing what she did. After achieving her goal, she goes back to leading a normal life and having a loving family.
