Here’s a quick guide to the American Pie cast and their characters. Released in 1999, American Pie was the directorial debut of brothers Paul and Chris Weitz who went on to helm Oscar-nominated romantic comedy About A Boy. A mix of coming-of-age comedy and gross-out gags, the film tells the tale of five friends – Jim, Oz, Kevin, Finch, and Stifler – who make a pact to lose their virginity before they graduate from high school.
American Pie is credited with reviving the teen sex comedy genre first popularized in the 1980s with films like Porky’s and Revenge Of The Nerds. It was a huge box office hit too, making an impressive $235.5 million worldwide against its rather slight $11 million budget. Thanks to its success the movie spawned theatrical three sequels – American Pie 2, American Wedding and American Reunion – which were released in 2001, 2003 and 2012 respectively, in addition to four STV spinoffs which went under the banner American Pie Presents. Another entry in the American Pie franchise was in the works but has yet to come to fruition.
The first movie’s supporting cast included How I Met Your Mother’s Alyson Hannigan as nymphomaniac band geek Michelle, Eugene Levy of Schitt’s Creek fame as Jim’s dad and Jennifer Coolidge (2 Broke Girls) as Stifler’s cougar mother. Let’s take a look at the main cast of American Pie and the characters they played.
Jason Biggs – James “Jim” Levenstein
Jim is an awkward, sexually inexperienced high school senior who is responsible for one of American Pie’s most infamous scenes in which he shares an intimate encounter with an apple pie. He’s played by Jason Biggs who, alongside reprising his role in various American Pie sequels, is also known for playing Larry Bloom in Orange Is The New Black.
Chris Klein – Chris “Oz” Ostreicher
Today Chris Klein is best known for playing Cicada on The Flash, but his role in American Pie was one of his earliest credits. He played laid-back lacrosse player Oz who falls for choir girl Heather, played by American Beauty’s Mena Suvari.
Thomas Ian Nicholas – Kevin Myers
As the only member of the group with a steady girlfriend (Tara Reid’s Vicky), Kevin has a sight advantage in fulfilling their pact. Kevin is played by Thomas Ian Nicholas who recently had a bit part playing a young Martin Scorsese in James Franco’s Zeroville.
Seann William Scott – Steve Stifler
Lovable jerk Stifler is the group’s sole non-virgin, but while he isn’t in on the virginity-losing pact his post-prom party offers his pals the perfect opportunity to fulfill it. Stifler is portrayed by Seann William Scott of Lethal Weapon and Goon fame.
Eddie Kaye Thomas – Paul Finch
Before nabbing his long-time role voicing Barry Robinson on American Dad!, Eddie Kaye Thomas played Finch in American Pie. Finch fancies himself an intellectual and has a rivalry going on with Stifler which culminates in him losing his virginity to Stifler’s mother.
